Delhi has a large number of homeless people and they spend their day and night on the footpaths and open parks. Since, night temperature is cool, these people warm themselves by burning wood, leaves, papers, tires and garbage. It is a usual practice in all over Delhi. This increases global warming and hence increases heat in the entire city. With the introduction of air conditioner in the country, the architecture of houses changed. The older houses tend to have much higher ceilings than the houses that are built now. With low ceilings, the heat inside houses have increased which leads to higher usage of air conditioners. People have stopped sleeping under the sky at nights because of the air pollution and smoke that is present in the air. More and more people have started to suffer from skin cancer because of the depletion of the Ozone layer. 2.2 million children in Delhi have irreversible lung damage due to the poor quality of the air. In addition, research shows that pollution can lower children's immune system and increase the risks of cancer, epilepsy, diabetes and even adult-onset diseases like multiple sclerosis. Our whole lifestyle in inter-related, the more we use Air conditioners, the more pollution and heat will generate and people will prefer to live in the comforts of their houses where they can use Air conditioners all day long. This cycle can never end and it might even get worse day by day.
People have stopped using easy techniques like using water to cool down their houses, or plants which make the air cooler. These practices need to start again in order to reduce global warming. Thinking of how people survived earlier, without A.C.’s or even fans, was much easier than how we are living. If we start to construct our houses the way the Delhites used their ‘Jugaads’ earlier, we might not need air conditioners that much and maybe save ourselves from this burning heat.
